  Introduction

In the Special Event stage, you will build up your understanding of some of the activities that are associated with a special event. These are often activities that make us huff and puff. You will also investigate any special food or activities and safe training you might do, leading up to or during these events, as well as the occasional foods that are often associated with these events.

  Brainstorm

Brainstorm a range of special events that you are involved in with food and physical activity. Think about the events:

What is the event?
What time of year the event occurs
How often – once a year, four (4) times a year
  Where the event is held
Is the event an individual or team activity?
What types of food are available at the event? Are these foods that you would eat everyday or occasionally?

Use the Brainstorm Template to help you record individually, a range of special occasions to do with food and physical activity.

This will help build up your understanding of a large range of activities you are involved in and foods you enjoy that you may not do and eat everyday, but only occasionally.

  Safe Preparation

It is important to try to think about and discuss what you did to prepare for these occasional events in the past.

During Preparation, you will take one of the events you brainstormed and discuss how you might prepare next time it occurs. Safety is always the first priority. Remember that any training you might do must be under the supervision of a teacher. Record your information on ‘My Preparation’ template, as this will help you when you come to prepare for the next occasional event. Stick this in one of your exercise books, journals or put up in the class so you remember to reflect on what you need to do when you prepare. Your teacher will guide you in the best place to put your preparation template.

Think about:

Training – warm up, activity, cool down, teacher supervision, safe surface and equipment
  Food
  Drink
  Weather
  Friends
  Team
  Support
  Safety
  Equipment
Do you have a war cry or chant
Keeping a record of times/distances etc

Remember you should drink water before, during and after physical activity.

  The Discussion

Work with members of a team. Try and have four or five (4 – 5) people in each group. Your teacher will help you form these groups.

Discuss:

‘How do you prepare safely for an occasional, special event like a sports carnival?’
