Introduction
Sport doesn’t just happen, someone
has to organise it. Organised sport is made up of people who
undertake different roles and responsibilities,
on and off the playing field. You don’t
always have to be a good player to be a
great team member. Sport provides us with
great opportunities to be active, but it
can also provide us with opportunities
to be with our friends and learn other
skills that we can use in our lives. There are lots of new ways that you can
be involved in sport and physical activity!
|
|
| |
Research
As a class, consider and list all the
different roles and responsibilities undertaken
or involved within a sporting organisation.
Think about the players, captains, coaches,
scorers, umpires or any other jobs required
to ensure that participation and competition
can take place.
Everyone is important to the organisation of sport or physical activity!
In small groups and using your Learning Logs, choose one of these roles and collect
information about what this person does and the skills required to perform the
role well. Your teacher will help you form these working groups.
For example, to be a good captain, what would you need to do and what personal
qualities would you require?
As a class, discuss together the important roles and responsibilities of a coach
and an umpire. Record your new findings in your Learning Log.

Team
Four Square
Now it is your turn to organise your
own sporting experience.
With your class you will plan, organise and play in a Four Square Challenge.
During this activity everyone will play, and have a turn at umpiring and being
coach
of your team.
As a class and with your teacher, you will need to:
 |
 |
Know how to play the game (see your teacher for a basic
description and rules of the game) |
| |
|
• Decide on specific rules and scoring
• Organise into teams of 3 or 4 and name your team
• Develop any specific safety rules
• Develop a round robin and ladder
• Organise equipment and appropriate playing surface |
| |
 |
Take it in turns to be the coach for each game. Remember
in this game the coach still plays |
| |
 |
As an individual you will need to know the rules so that
you can help umpire while you are waiting to go on court |
| |
 |
Remember if your Four Square Challenge is going to work,
everyone needs to help set up, organise and perform their job fairly and
to the best of their ability |
Now, hop to it! Work together with your teacher and your class mates and have
fun!

Discussion
 |
 |
Did you enjoy
planning, organising and implementing
your own competition? |
| |
 |
Did you find
that you were good at something other
than just playing? |
| |
 |
Did you find
a particular role challenging? |
| |
 |
Do you have
a better understanding of some roles? |
| |
 |
Can some be
harder than others? |
| |
 |
Importantly,
did you find a new way of being involved
in the activity?
|
Record your comments in your Learning Log.
If
you enjoyed assisting in the organisation
of your class round robin challenge, why
not encourage your teacher to try a season
or unit of sport called SEPEP or Sport
Education. Here you will be able to try
many more roles and tasks related to sport.
