  Introduction

What is the purpose of news? In this stage of the Learning Quest you will be investigating all about news and what a junior journalist does.

It is important to consider your role for the ‘New Ways News’ and the key messages the news agency wants to get across to its readers.

The New Ways News considers its main messages to be:

The importance of exploring new foods and new ways to be involved in physical activity
To encourage and give ideas of new foods and new ways to get involved with physical activities

You will be creating an article that reflects these key messages … however remember to use catchy, engaging titles like:

Taste Buds Attack … What’s New … Skateboards to Bocce …

  Task

You will be out and about, investigating the latest stories and crazes on new food and activity to report on.

Firstly as a class, discuss:

What is the purpose of news?
  Different ways news is produced?
What are the different sections of the news?

Collate the responses on the Board under three headings – Purpose, Ways and Sections.

Example:

Purpose Different Ways Section
To give information Online news Headlines
To sell things Newspaper Feature articles

  Weblinks

If you find that you need more information because you did not know much about news – the purpose, ways and sections, use the weblinks below to help build up your initial ideas.

  Article Review

Now you will be working individually, looking at an article already written for the News.

Choose one of the articles from the websites listed and write notes on the article in your New Things Learning Logs. Your teacher may have further articles for you to use.

When reflecting on the article, keep in mind:

How they have put together the information?
How many ideas have they discussed?
Have they got a catchy heading?
  How long is the article?

This article gives you a model for when you write your own news story. What do you like about the article? What have they told people? Is there anything else they should include?
