About

This section explains details of the Everyday Habits - Breakfast and Physical Activity Learning Quest.

Let's get started (1-2 lessons)

The Introduction will give students an idea of what the broad theme is and the key questions that need to be addressed like:

The importance of breakfast
Different breakfast ideas to start the day
What should a nutritious breakfast include
How do students feel if you miss breakfast
  Why some people skip breakfast
Ways to ensure everyone starts the day with breakfast everyday
Questions students may have about breakfast
The general benefits of physical activity
How much physical activity is necessary for good health
Why is daily physical activity important
Some of the barriers to being physically active
Ways to increase opportunities to be physically active

In this part, students will also investigate the nutritional value of breakfast foods and the menu. It is important that students form a good understanding about what is nutritious and how you can rate different foods. You may like to spend some time discussing this or visiting the different websites and interactives to help form this understanding of the different food groups and ingredients and nutrients in food.

Daily Diary (Allow 1 extra lesson for reflection on results)

This part of the learning quest is an opportunity for students to reflect and record their own breakfast habits and the physical activity they also do each day. This exercise needs to be conducted over a week from Monday to Sunday. It is important when students reflect in small groups that they are aware that we are all different and all need different amounts of food and physical activity.

The Recall and Record exercise could be set as a homework activity and/or a programmed activity for a specific part of a day, each day for a week. It should be stressed to students the importance of eating breakfast each day and how it may differ during the week compared to a weekend.

Around the World (3-5 lessons)

Around the World gives the students the opportunity to reflect and appreciate Australia's vast multicultural society. They can read a range of interviews conducted about different cultural breakfast and food celebrations.

Included in this section is also an extension activity if you want for students to interview family and friends about their cultural backgrounds, physical activity and food celebrations. There may even be an opportunity to invite some of these family members in during the Learning Quest for them to talk to the whole class or participate in the planned activities.

Let's Celebrate! (2-3 lessons for research, planning and sharing)

This section is about celebrating breakfast and how important it is for a good start to the day, everyday. It is also important for students to consider food safety issues when preparing foods. Each student works individually to plan a breakfast meal menu item. It is also important for students to explore any special activities that are part of celebrations. If not, they can create their own activity. These should be included as part of the breakfast celebration.

The class then pools ideas and decides on a class breakfast celebration which link to a celebration and or culture. A special guest could be invited by the class. For example, a local sporting identity or healthy role model.

The class votes, which foods and activity should be, included from all the student's ideas and individual breakfast items. The class may also decide on celebrating a particular day eg. Harmony Day; World Refugee Day. Check the EDNA Online Noticeboard web site for ideas.

Physical Activity Suggestions

Tai Chi (China)
Tai Chi is commonly performed by Chinese people as a means of developing harmony of the mind and body. It is a great physical activity to try each day and a great way to get the mind and body started in the mornings in conjunction with a nutritious breakfast.
If you know some Tai Chi or someone who can teach students then that is great.
If not, you might just like to begin with this everyday warm up.

Every Day Warm Up
Choose some slow groovy music that students can relate to, ensure that the lyrics are suitable.

Slowly and fluently perform some sporting movements without equipment, to the music. For example perform a golf swing, swimming strokes or some moves from your favourite game. Do each movement using the preferred and non-preferred arm, leg etc.
Make sure students have enough space to perform each movement safely.

Jump Clock (Peru)
Using a long rope, 2 students turn the rope while the others take it in turn to run in and jump the 12 hours of the clock. The first student runs straight through the rope to commence the game. The second student runs in and jumps once then runs out. The third student runs in and jumps twice then runs out. This continues until 12 consecutive jumps have been completed without missing a loop. If students miss a loop or stop the rope they take an end and the game begins again. This game is best played in groups of 6 - 8.

Four Corners ( Italy)
Four people stand on each corner of a square with the fifth person in the middle.
Corner people try to signal secretly to each other and change places without the middle person stealing their position.

Some other Physical Activity suggestions include:

Play a game of Bocce
www.bocce.net
Choosing a dance related to the culture or celebration chosen, to teach and perform with the special guest. (Chinese New Year Dragon Dance or Mexican Hat Dance)
Perform a Skipping Routine using cultural music
  Going for a walk

What have I discovered? (1-2 lessons)

This is the evaluation stage and is an opportunity for both the teacher and student to reflect on the learning from the Everyday Habits - Breakfast and Physical Activity Learning Quest. If only part of the Learning Quest was completed then the Assessment rubric will need to be altered to suit your class.

Competition (2 lessons)

To enter this competition your class must develop a jingle, rap, poem or song that promotes the importance of eating breakfast and being active everyday.

Students can learn more about this by completed parts of or all of the Everyday Habits - Breakfast and Physical Activity Learning Quest. It's up to you to decide whether your class completes some or all of the learning quest.

The minimum requirement for the competition is that your students identify the reasons why people don't eat breakfast and are not physically active everyday and come up with ideas as to how these barriers can be overcome.

Here are some idea's to get you started. However you should encourage your students to come up with their own observations and idea's.

Some of the reasons people don't eat breakfast include:

Over sleeping
Busy mornings with not enough time to eat
  Not hungry when getting up
  Inconvenient (can't be bothered)
No one else in the family eats breakfast
  Leave home early
  Nothing to eat

Some of the reasons people give for not being active include:

Low energy level
  Time constraints
  Weather
  Nowhere to exercise
No one to do activity with
  Energy level
No way of getting to organized activities
Spare time is spent watching TV or computer games etc
