  Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate the ability to share, communicate and investigate
Understand the concept of virtual shopping
Appreciation of the importance of a variety of foods and physical activity

  Introduction

This learning activity gives the students the opportunity to look at the impact of technology and busy life styles on nutrition and physical activity and the importance of a balanced and healthy food intake.

While students are doing this activity get them thinking about the advantages that online shopping might provide. They should also consider any disadvantages focusing on physical activity (does online shopping reduce daily activity in any way?).

  Background

Get students to work individually or in small groups (no more than 3) on the virtual shopping trip. Encourage students to share what they find about shopping online and also the advantages and disadvantages of doing this.

Students will take a trip … a virtual shopping trip. During this trip they will be given a budget and will need to buy food items for a special event or celebration and collate:

Food item
  Cost
Where the food fits within the 5 food groups and the 5 Fun Ways Wheel

The budget: The class decides on an appropriate budget for the celebration.
How many to shop for: Students will be shopping for 2 adults and 2 kids.
What to shop for: A special celebration to be decided on by the group of students. eg. Birthday party, beach party, family fun day, Mother’s Day.

  Learning Task

Familarise students with some virtual shops
Coles http://www.coles.com.au/

Woolworths http://www.woolworths.com.au/

BiLo http://www.bilo.com.au/

Students need to work out what groceries they need to buy for the celebration?

They should remember variety and choose foods and drinks from each of the 5 food groups

Students then collate the information using the shopping template.
Word.doc 63kb
Pdf 19kb
Remember to get students to collate the food item, cost and where they fit within the 5 food groups and which part of the 5 Fun Ways wheel do they fit under.

Once students have collated the information – total the amount of shopping
  Students should reflect:

How much change have they got left? Or did they overspend? If so, by how much? Print out their results and share their virtual trip with the class
Does their food reflect a good mix of the 5 food groups?
  Discuss as a class:

What are the advantages and disadvantages of shopping online?
What are the physical activities that would not be done by shopping online? Get students to make a list. Students should think about all stages of shopping … getting to and from the shops, doing the shopping, getting home and unpacking. Some of these may include: lifting bags, walking, talking, stretching etc.

  Teacher Notes

The curriculum areas included in this learning activity are:

Important Note:
