Introduction
|
|
| |
This learning
activity looks at the variety of snacks eaten
by each generation and the variety of typical
physical activities they were involved in.
It is important for students to highlight
the differences and some reasons why there
are differences. Also highlight the variety
of food and activity over the generations.
Doing a variety of physical activities can help reduce boredom, and reduce problems
that can arise from repetitive use of muscles and joints.
Students need to become aware of as many opportunities to be physically active
as possible and that old activities can become popular again.
Eating a variety of foods is also important as it helps to:
 |
 |
Ensure children get adequate
intakes of nutrients needed for healthy
growth and development |
| |
 |
Can help develop healthy eating habits
for the future |
| |
 |
Helps stop kids getting bored with
the same foods |
|

Learning Task
|
|
| |
 |
 |
Students investigate what
snacks they have on a typical day. If
they have trouble remembering – get
them to think about yesterday? A sandwich?
Crackers? Fruit?
Do they eat a variety of snacks or do they have the same snack each day? |
| |
 |
Get students to explore the variety
of physical activities they do, such
as sports they like to play, games and
activities they do in their recess and
lunch times, and what they do before
and after school
What activities do students do as a class? Are these different to the activities
students do outside of school? |
| |
 |
Students interview parents to see if
they remember what they ate for snacks
during the day and the types of physical
activities and games they played at school,
before and after school. If possible,
also get them to ask their grandparents |
| |
 |
Get students to draw up a table or
use Word or Excel programs to help collate
the information. Click on a template
to help you.

Students should reflect and share with
a small group: |
| |
|
| • |
Are there differences
in the snacks and types of activities
and games between them and their
parents/grandparents? |
| • |
What are the main differences
between each generation? |
| • |
What are the healthy choices
and activities? |
| • |
What do they think the next generation
will be eating for snacks and what
activities do they think they will
be doing? |
| • |
Provide some reasons for their
predictions of the future |
| • |
Are they starting to get a picture
of the variety of foods and activities
and how these have changed? |
|
|

Students develop
a timeline that shows significant changes
and continuities in the variety of foods
and physical activities from the past, present,
and their predictions for the future. Students
should include in the timeline recipes for
a variety of foods eaten at particular periods
of time and the description or rules to favourite
games.
Encourage students to show how innovations in food technology have changed and
how food is prepared.
Students should describe how physical activities and games have changed over
time. |
