Lesson IdeasOccasionally > Stamp of Approval

  Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate ability to share and communicate ideas
Understanding of how school canteens work and things kids like doing at recess and lunch time
Appreciation of the importance of occasional eating habits
Demonstrate ability to use online tools and other appropriate technologies to investigate new understandings

  Introduction

School canteens provide an excellent opportunity to promote both healthy and ‘occasional’ eating habits amongst students. It is also a good place to promote ‘occasional’ types of activities such as sport or dance. Does your canteen deserve a stamp of approval for promoting healthy eating as well as offering a range of ‘occasional’ foods? Or are there changes that you can see that need to be implemented?

Your class has been asked to make recommendations to the canteen committee and the school council about providing healthy food suggestions (including everyday and occasional foods) and occasional activities to do at lunch and recess. Occasional activities are those, which make us ‘huff and puff’ and are more vigorous. This includes sports. Occasional or ‘treat’ foods are those types of foods that are recommended to be eaten only occasionally.

  Background

For good health and fitness, it is important to eat a variety of foods from the 5 food groups (breads and cereals, fruit, vegetables, milk and dairy, meat and/or alternatives and fats, oils and sweet). Occasional foods or ‘treat’ foods fit in as long as the overall diet is balanced and full of everyday foods (such as grain-based foods, low fat dairy, vegetables and fruit, and protein foods like meat and/or legumes).

Students should think about what foods are needed for recess/morning tea and lunch, and remember to include everyday and occasional foods.

  Learning Task

Using the 5 Fun Ways Wheel, students will explore the different foods available in the canteen
Students explore the benefits of each food type. They can use the 5 Fun Ways Wheel to help with this. Students may like to use a table or Excel spreadsheet to help collate this information
  Discuss, as a class:

what are occasional foods and activities and why are they important?

how well students think your canteen promotes healthy eating and provides foods that will help them to be physically active

Students will investigate what types of foods their peers would like to see in the canteen. Also ask students for ideas on vigorous types of activities such as sports, that could be promoted by the canteen to be played at recess and lunch time.

How can you do this? Try a survey

Step 1 – Design a survey
Some examples of questions could be: Do you use the canteen? How often? What do you usually purchase? What occasional or treat foods does your canteen offer? What healthy food suggestions do you have that could be implemented in the canteen? Would you like the canteen to develop a sports snack pack for school sporting activities? Students should remember to have a mixture of different types of questions and not make the survey too long or people may not have time to complete it

Step 2 – Construct the survey – online or offline
If students decide to do an online survey, try the survey tool Zoomerang. However, note that the free version of this service has special conditions eg 10 day time limit. You may like to set up a (free) account for your class. http://www.zoomerang.com

Note: You will need to register to use the free survey tool option. It would be a good idea for this exercise to perhaps register the class. The free survey licence also has some limitations

Step 3 – Promotion
Students should promote their survey to the audience – eg. students, or students and teachers, or students, teachers and parents. Students should encourage people to respond with honesty

Step 4 – Collate responses
This may be a manual process or if your class uses Zoomerang then this software will collate the information and produces graph formats. Students will need to interpret the results rather than collate. However students only have 10 days after constructing their survey to conduct and collate results using Zoomerang

Step 5 – What recommendations do students have?

Students should make recommendations into a report format or official letter for the committee to see the changes that they want implemented in the school canteen and the reasons why. Once some of the changes are implemented or if the canteen already deserves a stamp of approval students can design and make a certificate

  Teacher Notes

The curriculum areas covered in this task include:

Health and PE – healthy suggestions and investigation into the school canteen
Language/Arts – designing and conducting a survey, recommendations report
Maths – average spending and graph/data interpretation
Art – design and construct a certificate for a stamp of approval

Other skills students will learn or develop include:

Sharing, investigating, brainstorming, reflecting, decision making, creativity, personal responsibility – safety, communicating, working as a class and individually.
