Lesson IdeasNew Things > It’s Game Time

  Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate ability to organise, communicate and share ideas
Design a new food and physical activity game
Appreciation and awareness of new foods and physical activities

  Introduction

This activity allows students to explore new physical activities and foods so others will learn the importance of NEW THINGS and also to develop ideas of what those NEW THINGS are.

The Sampson Game Company want your class to help children discover the importance of eating NEW THINGS and doing NEW physical activity by creating a game.

  Background

Your class will be given a creative mission, but first it is important that research is conducted about food and physical activity. This research will help develop the content for a game to share with year 3 / 4 students.

In order to complete this task students need to work as part of a team to gather important facts about the food pyramid, physical activity and the importance of NEW THINGS.

Students will be doing research during this task - remind student to make notes about information on nutrition, food, health and activity that they may be able to use in their game as they go.

When students develop their game, they must include:

1. A name
2. Equipment needed
3. Rules of the game
4. Directions on how to play
5. Number of players / teams to play

  Learning Task

Students can use the web links below to help in the research
Students work as a team to discuss what type of game they may develop and how the information they gathered may be used. Students should remember the NEW THINGS Game needs to reflect both new foods and physical activity. There are lots of games out there that they may base their game on. Some include:

Physical activity games like Twister
Card games
Online game using tools such as Hot Potatoes™ http://web.uvic.ca/hrd/halfbaked and Game Maker http://www.cs.uu.nl/people/markov/gmaker
Board games

Students should use the computer to develop rules and instructions and to help with images to make their game bright, fun and creative
Students should play the game as a trial

Encourage students to reflect on:

Would the Sampson Board Game Company be impressed by their design and development?
Will children learn NEW THINGS by playing this game?

Students should explain to the class how their NEW THINGS food and physical activity game explores and develops NEW THINGS and ideas. For example the game explores a range of new things but looks at mainly physical activity. It’s important to try new activities to develop good motor skills

  Teacher Notes

The curriculum areas included in this learning activity are:

Health and PE – awareness of a variety of NEW THINGS foods and physical activity and why it is important to learn NEW THINGS
Design – design and develop a game
Language Arts – developing and writing of rules and directions for the game.

Other skills students will learn or develop include:

Sharing, investigating, brainstorming, reflecting, decision making, researching, presenting, communicating, working as a class, small groups and individually.

Students should be assessed in this learning task about how they worked in teams, the information they found, their creative development of a game, suitability for the target audience, and their use of time.
