  Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate the ability to share ideas and communicate
Investigate people involved in food manufacturing
Appreciation of the importance of everyday food and physical activity
Understanding of how to develop a picture book
Demonstrate ability to use appropriate technologies to conduct research and develop a picture book

  Introduction

This learning activity is focused on developing a picture book about a particular food production from seed to production and manufacturing. The book will also promote the importance of physical activity in our daily lifestyle. Students should focus on the different people involved in food manufacturing eg. the growers, transporters, pickers, factory workers etc. and reflect on the physical activity they do everyday as part of food manufacture and give examples. Where relevant, students should also provide suggestions on how physical activity levels could be increased (eg: how could a truck driver who is fairly sedentary increase his/her physical activity over the day).

  Background

The picture books will include information such as:

Name of the food
How the food is grown, collected, transported and processed

The picture books will include information such as:

Promote physical activity or how the food contributes to a healthy lifestyle
The daily activity required to be done during each part of food manufacturing process and how these differ from each other
Are there any opportunities to increase physical activity involved in the various parts of food manufacture?

For example a truck driver needs to check the loads on the truck which requires him/her to get out of the truck and walk around a bit. Are there any ways students can suggest that the truck driver could increase his/her physical activity?

Students will need to research for this activity to find out about grains, production, manufacturing and recipes. Students can conduct this research via the Internet – see some of the websites below to help support students investigation. They may also be able to try the library or by writing to actual food industries. Remember to make sure students also consider the daily activities involved in food manufacture and if there are any opportunities to increase physical activity.

Students should be able to use the computer, clipart and original drawings or scanned images to help produce their picture book. They could record their voice and use the talking interface and listen function of Inspiration® V7 to create an interactive talking picture book. PowerPoint is another program, which could be used to create an electronic picture book.

  Learning Task

The class will create a series of picture books that illustrate the process of food production and manufacture of a chosen food
Discuss firstly, what grains are. Students could demonstrate how corn can be changed from a kernel to popcorn, using actual food pictures or illustrations. Encourage student’s to think about other ways corn kernels are used
Students can brainstorm and list other foods that can be made from grains and what the grain products are
Students can develop a simple recipe using this food and provide information on food preparation methods to include in the picture book
Develop picture book. The way the book is produced and developed is up to the students. However it is suggested that they explore other picture books first. Some key questions you may ask:

What do you like about the picture book?
What makes this a picture book?
How long is it?
What are the best features?
Students share and present their book to the class.
