  Learning Outcomes

Understanding of everyday foods and the role they play in being physically active
Appreciation that good nutrition everyday is important to help growth and be healthy
Demonstrate the ability to select appropriate technologies to brainstorm and or develop and maintain a learning log

  Introduction

This activity will assist students to discover the many different opportunities they might have to improve and increase their daily physical activity. It also encourages them to discuss the importance of everyday foods and to identify those foods that provide energy to be active. During this learning task it is important for students to think of activity as an opportunity not an inconvenience. Students should try to accumulate at least 30 minutes a day of moderate-intensity activity. This is a great start to improving their health. Good nutrition everyday is also important to help with healthy growth and development.

  Background

Everyday activities might include things such as lunchtime sports practice and all the incidental opportunities for physical activity like walking to the shops rather than driving, and using the stairs instead of lifts.

Encourage students to be physically active everyday in as many ways as they can, through activities such as play, games, sports, recreation, physical education and planned exercise. It is also important for students to realise that they don’t have to spend hours doing strenuous activity to improve their health. Accumulating at least 30 minutes a day of moderate-intensity activity is a great beginning to a healthy lifestyle.

  Learning Task

As a class, brainstorm everyday foods that students eat for meals and for snacks. Do the same for everyday activity
Students should discuss the importance of everyday foods and everyday activity. They should consider which everyday foods are important to provide energy to be active everyday
Students develop a list to add to as they begin to find more new and exciting ways to be physically active everyday and discover new everyday foods. They may want to use a wall chart or computer software such as Inspiration® or Word. With the everyday foods, get students to highlight the items that provide energy. Students may want to do this by colouring them in. This will give the class a good indication on what foods and drink they should have prior to physical activity
Students should keep their own Learning Log Book and record:

Everyday foods which provide the body with energy to be active
A list of new everyday activities that they would like to include in their daily routine
Log all the physical activity they do each day
